Simply put, the most dangerous spell in 5-color Zoo. Between the fetch lands and shocklands, it is trivial to bring out all 5 basic land types as early as turn 3. You usually let the first few attackers through anyways because you expect to stabilize, perhaps with mass removal. Then before you can blink your 10 life becomes 0.

Ouch, with dual lands this can be 5 damage for 1Red on turn 3.

This sees play in modern as a fantastic burn spell, in a format where Lightning Bolt is legal. This is top-tier burn in decks that are already running 4 colours, which is many of them, even the aggressive decks of the format.

Although I cannot comment on its usefulness in the Modern format, I have played this when IPA was the standard block. It is very good, and should not be undervalued. As other have mentioned, you clearly want a domain deck, or at least some kind of Zoo or 4-colored, even 5-colored, deck to use this in. Anything less, then CLEARLY you should run bolt. 3.5/5

You can have this online in 3 turns with the proper Zendikar or Onslaught fetchlands and Ravnica shocklands.

5 damage for 2 mana is nothing to be scoffed at. Lightning bolt and this card can't really be compared. Different mana cost, different deck types. Lightning Bolt is unquestioningly good but in domain I'd rather have this most of the time.

Three damage at sorcery speed is bad for red. More than three damage is difficult to have.
This card is useful only in particular 5 color decks which need a removal damage spell.
