Each Time Spiral card was an homage to at least one previously printed card.

This card is referencing Water Elemental for power and toughness, Fire Elemental for flavor text, and Exhaustion mechanically.

Oh Pickle, how I miss you. This guy and Vesuvan Shapeshifter were a match made in heaven.

Flavor sounds like older Fire Elemental's:

"Fire Elementals are ruthless infernos, annihilating and consuming their foes in a frenzied holocaust. Crackling and blazing, they sear swift, terrible paths, leaving the land charred and scorched in their wake."

Kind of expensive, but good if you manage to turn it face up.

I'd say its more of a reference to stasis, as exhaustion only effects creatures and lands during the untap step and this card and stasis skip the untap step all together.

Any chance to make a stasis reference is a must.

This guy was an absolute wonder!!!

Brine Elemental along with Tezzeret, the Seeker actually helped me win a couple of EDH games yesterday (had multiple artifacts and needed the lockdown) but by god this card saved my backside several times and i almost got the pickles lock thanks to it!!

I've tried many times to use the flip up effect but it either died or I just never had the mana to pay it.
