@Papik: you'd actually lose 1 more than Banefire would deal because Banefire's cmc on the stack is whatever they paid for X plus one.

@Spitfire703: Only when it's not on the stack. I'm pretty sure that Ratoly is right, and that X is taken into account in converted mana cost, it's just that as long as the spell is off the stack, X=0.

@Ratoly: When determining cmc, X=0. You would only lose one life while the guy casting Banefire would probably be killed by his own spell.

theres a red cantrip that costs the same as this and you don't lose the life. bleh
edit: yeah i guess i got shunt and reroute mixed up haha, swore that was why shunt was rare, thought it was meh too haha
