I think sometimes the Wotc leave hints in the flavor text as to the quality of their cards for newer players.

The reason this card feels bad to me is just that your paying an extra mana for a larger body when it really dosen't need it.

Check out Prodigical pyromancer for an average pinger.

Yes, this card sucks NOW but you have to remember that when it was printed pinging wasn't something red had, it was a blue thing.
Red didn't get it until Planar Chaos with Prodigal Pyromancer, the alternate universe version of Prodigal Sorcerer. You were paying over the odds to get something you weren't normally able to get.
