It's kind of funny that poor Pashadar Dirf was apparently killed by a counterspell. Not even the islandwalk of his crew was enough to save them!
As Zoah points out, there are many better alternatives nowadays (although nothing strictly better in the same tribe - only Cursecatcher, Grimoire Thief and Lullmage Mentor seem to help you counter things in addition to being fishmen).
