lightning bolt isn't an average card, its kiiiiiiiind of the defining burn spell that all others are compared to.
And do you realize what you justsaid, desolation MAsticore? "Big deal, Drain Life has been doing this at Sourcery speed for 1BBBB to players/critters with at least 3 life/toughness for years now." Im gonna go out on a limb here and say lightning helix has the better value for dealing 3 damage.

I started playing Magic when Ravnica/Time Spiral were standard. Kamigawa had just rotated out. This was one of the first cards I found on The Gatherer, along with Remand, that I really wanted, but was out of my budget. I think it was 5 bucks a card. Had to wait a good 6 months before I was finally able to replace the Shocks in my deck for this! Great memories.

Ajani Vengeant gets to upgrade the art on this now. Very nice. :)

I like this one better if I'm building a Ravnica themed deck, but Ajani's goes better in a 'Im going to kick your ass and take your name now, kthxbai' deck

One of the most elegant cards in the game, combining the two basic color-defining 'boon' effects in a way that fits perfectly with the flavor of the guild. Love it.
