Who cares what rangers can do? You are a soldier!

A skilled soldier can put a land into play for 1 green mana

A lot of folks seem to forget he's a red two-drop with 2 power, which was still sought after at the time. The fact he was splashable and actually had another ability was just gravy, even though you would see him in competitive monored decks.

It's not a terrible card, but I wouldn't use it. It's not like Green really needs any more mana fixing.
