It's an 8/8 for 4 in any deck that would play it, but some evasion would have been nice. I wonder why ug madness never played this?

Biggest squirrel ever. Awesome, but why threshold? Why does a squirrel freak out when there's enough dead things?

People seem to be missing the point. The art does not depict the squirrel - it depicts the beast the squirrel has become.
The reason squirrels (and anything else that lives in the forest of Krosa for that matter) turn into monsters is because of all the mana. You could think of the threshold mechanic as mana accu'mulating in your graveyard (fits the flavor of the card, since time passes before the mutation is complete) and affecting your creatures and spells.
