Somewhat viable card at the time assuming you didn't have any Angels. Otherwise, in today's meta, there are much better choices.

Like what AlphaNumerical said, having a card with a strength and toughness of 6 back then was probably amazing. But like how Sengir Vampire used to be one of the best Black cards, the new cards kick in and overtake the old.

Without it's effect, i could stand. I mean, it'd be better if it were a lower cost, but then we'd have a situation like Leatherback Baloth. Its effect could be used for good, like if you're attacked by a 8/6 and you don't want your Incarnation destroyed, you'd prevent 3 damage, leaving him alive minus a few life points. That'd be excellent if you still want to defend with it. It's almost like its got a regeneration, except it costs life... which SUCKS.

Joking. But still, I think it's a little under-rated. 3.5 stars for me.

I guess this was supposed to be White's "big creature" of the set, but it doesn't measure up to any of the others (Pitlord, Force of Nature, Shivan Dragon, and Mahamoti Djinn) in the both the lack of threat value (no way to slam damage through) and the frightening drawback.

I think the drawback is what really kills this card since to use its other ability, you already have to burn lifepoints. I guess the theory was that you were supposed to gain tons of life to keep this alive and then gradually wear your way through the enemy's defenses... except that cards like Terror already existed, as did regenerators, which stop this guy cold.

Still, I'd like to see an improved version of this card return - just by stripping away the "lose half your life' drawback, and maybe dropping the casting cost to 4WW, one could get an interesting creature that would actually make lifegain somewhat amusing.

Very flavorful :)
Very unplayable :(

They tried to fix this card with Serra Avatar; it losed in flavor and gained in power.

This card is decent. It's a 6/6 for 6 that at the cost of life can become rather durable. Seeing as white has the most life gain, I'm sure this guy had his uses back in the day, maybe. Currently though, it's hard to for him to compete as a 6 drop against cards like Wurmcoil Engine.

In conclusion I rate this guy a 3/5 for relative playability and interesting design.

Also, I can't help but think that if a creature was printed with this ability nowadays, it'd be a black demon.

Well its a 6/6 for 6.

The drawback is way to much, considering his ability does nothing to protect from terror or whatnot.
Today without his drawback and keeping his positive ability, while maybe adding vigilance, would make for a playable card.
