I think those artifacts are pretty cool - you just gotta think of using them as soon as you can in a turn. Otherwise you might end up with nothing but an untapped Signet which wouldn't do you any good... ;-)

These DO accelerate and fix your mana, but at the cost of a card from your hand.

Lands also accelerate and fix at the cost of a card. So do most ramp spells like Rampant Growth.

notably, this whole cycle was reprinted in both Archenemy and Commander. I think it's not bad odds we'll be seeing them again in Planechase 2012, and then it will be official:
40x Signets is the 'poor man's' 40x Original Dual Lands, and every new player would be blessed if you gave them your spares.
