I have mix feeling about this card. It can indeed stop a land drop but given how many choices of lands per deck these days and how rare mono-color decks are now, I don't think that's the best use of it. I'm sure naming 'Force of Will' would help in a lot of situations, allow you to cast spells safely after you see a blue opponent suspiciously tapped out.

I like how it literally reads "Name A Card". Not just a Magic The Gathering card. ANY CARD. Even your Barclaycard.
And if it all goes wrong at least you can always name THE ACE OF SPADES, THE ACE OF SPADES...

3.0 stars is the perfect place for this card to sit.

Visions of Beyond has recently replaced Brainstorm as the Poor-Man's Ancestral Recall (ok, fine, maybe not STRICTLY replaced, but it is definitely a contender. If you don't have 800 dollars, and for some reason just can't find Brainstorm cuz its either too old or your shop ran out of Commander decks, then Visions is a fine sub for a variety of decks. Including non-Dredge.)

I would say Conjurer's Ban ought to get to be called Poor Man's Meddling Mage. It hits lands which is very fine, but its a one-shot effect, so you're probably better off calling whichever counterspell or kill spell you think you'll most likely see and force through something fast and strong on your turn. Calling lands can definitely backfire if you don't call the right one. Calling any counterspell is just slightly safer, in case they have two in hand, and you call one of them. They still have a counter, but if you have two threats to play, they won't be able to... (see all)

If you're already running Gitaxian Probe or Telepathy, you might consider this in a really hard control deck. Outside of already being in that situation, I don't see a reason to run this card in any deck. It's just too useless if you don't know what cards are in your opponent's hand. If you want to make sure they never cast that one card in their deck that has really given you trouble, you're looking for Pithing Needle or Phyrexian Revoker.

I agree with Kroen. This card is a lot stronger than it looks at first. Can give you a huge advantage by preventing an opponent from playing a land, especialy good against mono-colored decks and it also dosen't give you card disadvantage since it draws.

@Designer_Genes: It prevent it "until your next turn", so yes, you can prevend forests or swamps for being played.

Why couldn't this be an instant? Or have Haunt? Or something.

@People saying you can name a land: I forgot it was useful to prevent my opponent from playing lands during my turn. All of those lands with flash/ cards that give lands flash are now officially hosed since this has split second. Twice.
