Because artifacts don't have throats.

Erik's Random card 6/21/2011
This was in the design file, priced at 2B.

I thought it would make Standard more fun at 1B. This block has a lot of artifact creatures. However they were at a competitive disadvantage compared with Black creatures because of Doom Blade. Pricing this card at 1B put it on par with Doom Blade, and helped put artifact creatures on par with black creatures.

Fools, only the most powerful magic can destroy Emrakul. That or Ersatz Gnomes.

Though it is very likely that Emrakul will be an illegal target as the spell is being cast, rather than when the spell resolves. So you may have to work around it by targeting an Inktreader Nephilim, and then making GTFO colorless. (this ofcourse turns GTFO into a 2 cmc Damnation)

@RedCravat

True, but a wizard singlehandedly ripping out the throats of some Grizzly Bears seems a tad more epic than zapping them with a weird energy ray thingy.

@Ragamander
While this flavor does suggest slitting ones throat, its a magic that snuffs out the signature of life. Artifacts do not have that biological signature, so it makes sense. As for killing a non artifact lifeless wall, well that is a breach in flavor but oh well.

Terror is survived by black creatures and artifacts.
Doom Blade is survived by black creatures and regenerators.
Go for the Throat is survived by artifacts and regenerators.

The cycle is complete.

Between black creatures, artifacts and regenerators, black creatures are the most common, so this is definitely the best of the three. That said, I will never want to put four of these in a deck unless I have at least two Doom Blades. I'll play this over Doom Blade, but I'll still split when I can. I'm thinking 1/0, 1/1, 2/1, 3/1, 3/2, 4/2, 4/3, 4/4 for my progression of Go for the Throat/Doom Blade from 1 to 8 copies. Grasp of Darkness probably would go in there too if the deck is black enough, of course.

Even though the acronym doesn't match, I mentally refer to this card as "GTFO"

Abyssal Persecutor just got a whole hell of a lot sexier. Love the art as well, kind of seems like it came from Cold Snap.

Cheap, efficient monoblack removal that can nail black creatures. I Love it. Often better than doom blade in standard, almost always in extended and legacy.
