I hear people saying this card is a bit "conditional" And for this, I've got something to say:

Step 1. Xenograft
Step 2. Angelic Overseer
Step 3. Trollface.jpg

I think you see where I'm going with this.

I think people's problem with this card is they can't break themselves of the horrible notion that angels deserve to be their own deck type, and not simply at the helm of a soldier/cleric deck.

This card is an absolutely amazing collaboration of flavor and effect - she is powerful, but not by herself; without her devoted, she is nothing. She doesn't belong with the other self-righteous angels that only care to consort with each other, she knows the place of an angel is to watch over and save mankind.

From MORT-al HOPE im-MORT-al POW-er SPRINGS.

da-DUN da-DUN da-DUN da-DUN da-DUN

Iambic pentameter FTW. Whoever you are, flavor text writer, Shakespeare is proud of you.

I really like how Wizards handled the mythics in Innistrad; they're balanced, but still powerful. This angel is a prime example. She's very strong, but only when built around. You can't just throw her into any deck with white in it and call it a day, the way people used to do with Baneslayer Angel.

When I saw Baneslayer, my first thought was "...Well, that's overpowered."

When I saw Angelic Overseer, my first thought was "Wow, that's cool-- time to make a Human tribal deck for her!"

In short, Overseer encourages unique & creative deck-building, whereas Baneslayer and its ilk (Titans, Wurmcoil Engine, Massacre Wurm, etc) encourage the exact opposite.

Luckily, Innistrad is a sign that things may be moving in the right direction. It seems Wizards may have finally learned that "mythic" should mean "unique, flashy, and build-around-me"... NOT "overpowered, play-me-in-every-deck because I'm Just Plain Better."

This is easily my favorite art and creature in all of Innistrad! There are many seconds, but this is first!

The tribes are intermixed again, it seems. Just like in Lorwyn.
