bijartduath: an interesting conundrum, and the only way to really get it is to explain Storm decks- they actually aren't intuitive, but once you know how to do it, they are just about the most fun you can have on only one side of the table at a time:

For starters, early powerful Magic sets had cards like Ancestral Recall and Time Walk that produce stupidly powerful effects at low cost, AND help you set yourself up to get this in your hand.

Well, that's nice, but then you are still adding 1 + 1 + 2 + 1.....mana costs to rack up your storm count, which doesn't solve your problem of 'where the heck am I gonna get 9 mana?'

Enter. Rituals. Simian Spirit-Guide. Rite of Flame. Pyretic Ritual. Seeting Song. Geosurge.

Unlike the tapping of a Mox (unless it's the turn you play it), these spells will not only cumulatively increase your mana, but also count as spells for Storm (except the S... (see all)

Ekroub: your friend is right. When Dragonstorm goes on the stack, at the same time X copies of Dragonstorm go on the stack, where X is the number of other spells played. So you can counter the original, but the other copies would still resolve.

Best to use your counter on the last Rite of Flame he uses to get to that 9th mana. Or use a Mindbreak Trap.

@TheWrathofShane

Reread the wording of storm, it only makes copies for each spell cast that turn, which means other storm copies wouldn't help.

Might be better off with, say, some Lotus Petals and Pyretic Rituals instead of the other storm cards to simply up the available mana accel.

Does it bother anyone else that there are no permanents other than creatures that have "Dragon" as their type? I truly feel that this card has way more potential than it is given within the confines of Magic: The Gathering.

Flavorful, but it does, sadly, require a bit of work to do it. (Specifically, you have to have enough mana to play a lot of spells.)

A great way to get it out is to transmute a Grozoth.

Devastating with Inkmoth Nexus and Blazing Shoal, hence why the latter was banned in Modern. It was usually a turn 2 kill.
