BWilson, your friend is wise. In Mono-Green, having a land destroyed is like spilling a drop of water out of a 10-gallon jug, since and respectable green deck will likely have a half-dozen creatures that are also mana, and a rediculous number of forests to replace the one lost. Against black/red, it has limited appeal, but thats why you should pop him when your opponent has little mana to spare.

Some people just like to hate EVERYTHING.

This card will never see play in a constructed format, but in limited it's actually really good. I really don't understand why people dislike this card. It's either a 4/5 on turn three, or a hasty 4/5 on turn four, both of which are great deals. Outside of combat it's kind of like a 4/1, but that's the drawback that keeps it balanced, and even then, you only paid three mana in exchange for your opponent's removal spell. Nothing huge lost.
In M10 limited, I feared using this card a lot because of Sparkmage Apprentice, but in M11, the only cards that gain value when you're facing this card are Stabbing Pain and Hornet Sting, neither of which is very good anyway, and Prodigal Pyromancer, which is already good (and able to be played around, since it's likely to come out before you play your Awakener Druid).

In M11 limited, while I certainly wouldn't pick it extremely early, I'd play this card in any deck with a good amount of green.

"This was so annoying in draft!... I lost quite a few creatures to a FOREST.
But yeah, this is a terrible card."

Seriously? Do you understand what you said? Maybe if you said terrible in constructed I could agree, but you just told us how bad it killed many of your creatures and then proceeded to tell us its a bad card. Idk, doesn;t quite follow, even if you did remove it it still killed a bunch of dudes.

Christ you people are picky, you get a 1/1 that's only useful as a chump blocker, and a 4/5 that's also a land, for three mana!!!!!!!!!!

Or Doom Blade the forest treefolk creature and leave the idiot who used this card one land less and with a 1/1 chump blocker.

This was so annoying in draft! Luckily, triskelion was able to deal nicely with him each time I saw it. But still, I lost quite a few creatures to a FOREST.
But yeah, this is a terrible card. Probably won't see much play.

basically, you get a 1/1 dude and a 4/5 Llanowar Elves. For 3 mana. Now I don't know about them big league magic folk, but at the kitchen table, this is amazing.

Bad creature, but it fits green's flavor very well.

Edit: Alright, I thought about it for a bit and will admit that it's actually pretty decent. You get quite a bit of power for what you pay, and as SoulShatterer says, if the land gets Doom Bladed or whatever you didn't really lose much (assuming you have a lot of ramp).

Despite all that though, it's just not a card I'd use.
