I was running 7 or so infect creatures at the prerelease. It wasn't enough, and this dude was pretty much a total dud as a result. I'm worried that a deck with enough dedicated infect might pass on this guy in favor of stronger/more evasive phyrexians. I'm not sure where he fits into the environment.

I see a Xenomorph.

As for its usefulness, I didn't do too well with it at the pre-release. Of course, this only helps retrieving Putrefax or Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon back to your hand.

I don't like it that much. Infect will be most likely a block only mechanic, so this will get worse over time. Gravedigger might not have infect, but at least it can return any creature to your hand.

Cute card. It's fine by itself just because it has infect. Casual loves it as playing a full set gives you a good chance of looping several together through recursion. The colorless Gravedigger aspect may make it a passable candidate for poison decks to sideboard against control.

The backbone of a draft infect deck. Keep those bombs coming back. Although the most obnoxious thing is using one to recurse another.

a seriously underrated card. combo with throne of geth and possibly hand of the praetors for sick times. your skittles/ hand of the praetors got roasted by removal? your putrefax died? no problem! oh yeah, two of these fetching each other infinitely is guaranteed to make his spot removal sans non-graveyard destined effects look pretty stupid. don't forget, proliferate and infect appear to be made for each other, and with throne of geth stoking the flames for those everflowing chalices, ol infect doggie will just keep coming back

I'd argue that this is one of the best infect commons out there. If I was drafting infect, I'd likely only take Cystbearer or maybe Plague Stinger over this. This is because this is one of the 2 ways that infect can get any card advantage, the other being Moriok Replica. Unless you have Skittles, the only way an infect player can win in the late game is to keep on Recurring infect creatures, and this guy is the key to doing so.

Did infect need help coming back from the graveyard? Wasn't killing most players by turn 4 or 5 enough?

if I wasn't so annoyed with the limitations of infect, I would use this card supposing I had an infect deck.
