He's not terrible, just not as good as some of the other Vanguards. You can play him in hellbent decks (easier to reach hellbent when you start 1 down) and decks which use Necropotence or other cards which let you pay life for some advantage. Having a colorless, uncounterable, removal-proof way to pump for that last bit of combat damage is nice too. If it cost less than 1 to 1, it would be too good. As it is now, it is fairly costed, though it would be preferable if it was {1}: +1/+1.
