Many of the saproling cards are a lot more efficient... but having squirrel tokens is just great :)

Ignoring all the wacky combos and everything this guy gives you a total of 9 (1 elf + 4 pumped squirrels) power and toughness on the field for 3GG and the echo.It's not like you're shooting yourself in the foot to get this guy out, people forget that. Even if you can't pay the echo and Deranged Hermit bites it you still get 4 1/1 squirrels for 3GG, a decent consolation prize. If you already paid the echo cost and he gets doom blade-ed maybe not so much but still, good card.

I miss Squirrel tokens, they really exemplify the green 1/1 token in a way Saprolings, Insects, and Elves never could. Elves are known for they great gang tactics and mana production, not token swarms, Saprolings aren't even real things, they're toothy forest worms or something, and Insects, while capturing the swarm feeling, don't necessarily scream green, flies are the quintessential insect swarm, and are associated with black in Magic.

While i agree that a squirrel is a very good green counterpart to black's rats (whereas elves are the counterpart to zombies) Saprolings do exemplify green flavor very well. It is a great example of growth right down to the aspect that they are generally spawned from other lifeforms.
