I have a feeling that the point of the tap ability is as a way to still use Mawcor to "attack" if the enemy has a flier/reacher that can either stonewall or outright kill it. Sit back and use the less powerful but dependable artillery until you get rid of the barricade. (And/or use it as point destruction on a problematic X/1 creature.)
