My only complaint is that he can be shocked/burst lightninged -- unlike, say, Daru Warchief.

You can't seriously compare this to Captain of the Watch - that would be like comparing Goblin King to Siege-Gang Commander. And no, Preeminent Captain is not a valid excuse for ignoring the large difference in mana costs. The fact of the matter is, that Field Marshal buffs your entire force and provides your whole army with first strike - an ability that time and time again has proven itself to be very strong (just take a look at Blade Splicer for a recent example) - and does so at the slim cost of three mana.
The global nature of his abilities doesn't necessarily have to be a drawback either: rarely anyone plays with a soldier deck nowadays (I for one don't know anyone who's still playing with one), and you could even turn it into an advantage if you're playing two-headed giant with a friend who is also playing a soldier deck.

Beats out Captain of the Watch by being lower on the curve and having a more useful Lord ability.

Debatable whether this is better than Rhox Pikemaster, but I prefer this over the Rhox simply because of the lower cost and the P/T buff.

Best soldier lord in Magic at this time. Better than Captain of the Watch and Rhox Pikemasters, bar none. Even better than Veteran Swordsmith. UBER, indeed. 5/5

My absolute favorite card to this day. I started playing MtG with that Coldsnap Soldier deck and this card brought me so many good memories of when I was first starting out. Great name/flavour, great art. Not much more you can ask for.
