I would assume that emblem is for . . positive effect for the controller . . not to be given to your opponent for negative effect. It doesn't really fit the flavor.

This guy (as far as I know) was the fist guy with an affect that lasts for the rest of the game. if he would be reprinted today, it would probably read: Whenever Stigma Lasher deals damage to a player, that player gets an Emblem with "You can't gain life."

So...Elspeth gives an emblem, but this guy doesn't? He does something for the rest of the game, though. I don't know if I see the rules difference.

I have this in a red/green deck with Monstrous Growth. Combine that with a trample giver like Tromp the Domain, and this sucker wipes them OUT!

I love this card. Solid 2 drop that shuts down lifelink mechanic, which can be one of the most OP in the game.

You could also abuse this guy's effect to ensure that your opponent will regret not being able to gain life for some extra fun if you play cards like Fiery Justice, Wall of Shards, Skyshroud Cutter, Invigorate, or Grove of the Burnwillows.

Rainyday, you're wrong. Of course only a few decks actually run lifegain, but once his ability resolved he or she won't be able to gain life no matter if Stigma Lasher gets killed or not.
And blocking this guy is a joyful thing as well, it's a 2/2 Wither creature after all, so unless you kill a chump-blocker you shrink another one in size permanently.
