I look at it less as a Tarmogoyf and more as a Flesh Reaver with only half the drawback.

Unless your facing a mirror, the drawback is not an issue. By the time it matters you have run out of steam and lost, or just flat out won.
4 damage is a 5 turn clock, and a 2 drop is pulling that kind of weight. Not to mention you have other creatures and burn (blightning). 4/4 this early is hard to block, because loosing a creature to prevent damage is seldom worth it.

Have you played against this card?
It's not that it has combat tricks and blah blah blah, it's because at no mana cost, you can beat or trade with creatures all the way until around turn 5. Using removal on a 2-drop is usually not very pleasant.
It's not that his guy kills you by himself, it's that on their turn 3, they are swinging at you with a 4/4 while casting stuff like blightning, maelstrom pulse, lightning bolt, or terminate only to follow it up on turn 4 with a bloodbraid elf, which will likely mean more damage (lightning bolt, blightning, another putrid leach) or removal (lightning bolt, terminate, maelstrom pulse). You get overwhelmed by the fact that their 2-drop will kill you if unanswered.
Saying this isn't overwhelming is like saying aut... (see all)

Well, of course being able to pump it as much as you want to would be really overpowered, and something that Wizards wouldn't want to be in the game! That's why they printed Immolating Souleater!
