I bot this card for $2 (practicly a steal)! the shop owner was about to start a tournament so he was in a hurry. he looked up the price and said $2. i was amazed! make sure that you have tons of creatures on the fid whn you play this. you will be unstoppable. works well with Master of the Wild Hunt. he can make tokens every turn to feed to this demon . theyre both in my black green 2010 deck. thats how i roll

I don't get the high rating. Sure, it kills opponents in Limited, but in Constructed it doesn't stand much of a chance. Too many superior cards out there.

In my swarm deck, two of these guys lost their jobs to a Butcher of Malakir and the third to Eldrazi Monument

Very sad that this is 'strictly' better than Lord of the Pit. Old cards that were such classics should try to avoid being so out-classed like that. But, I would be more okay with a Xathrid reprint than another Baneslayer. So of course, being Wizards, they did just the opposite. xP

Yeahhh.. I'm not seeing it, all your opponent has to do is earthquake or something to kill off the other creatures and it does 7 to its controller and taps? I mean yes obviously it can be a good card, but it can just as easily be used to kill you in response. The only time the life loss is major is when you sacrifice a good creature as well. After all that, it has no removal protection either and still costs 6 mana with 3 black. It's not a bad card, but it's not a mythic rare in my book, its ability can be used against you as easily as it can work for you. Also, after they printed baneslayer.. well, its a demon, and the life loss is all fixed by a single baneslayer attacking every turn, and she comes into play at 5 mana.

This card is not strictly better than Lord of the Pit because the lord does not get tapped when there is nothing to feed.

So what does "Xathrid" actually mean? Flavour-wise, I prefer good old Lord of the Pit.
