My friend played splinter twin on this and ended up gaining like 10+ life per turn and still had defenders.

Good as long as you have more creatures then your opponent. Doubling Season and token generators are the Lifestrider's freinds.

Try him with token generators and Seedborn Muse, I suppose.

It's very effective in draft, especially against red. I always just looked right past it until tonight, and i was very impressed. It's well out of burn range and red hates life gain. I dropped two of these, then went about my business while my opponent had to wait for heat ray and nine mana. I won the game while he was waiting. 8 toughness is sweet.

Surprised no one has mentioned the obvious Doran, the Siege Tower.

It's rated low because life gain is generally a poor strategy and because tapping creatures to gain life means losing them to defend against the loss of life on your opponents next turn.

This is excellent when used in conjunction with Beastial Menace, Howl of the Night Pack, and Stampeding Wildebeests.
10+ life per turn ftw.

I almost wish that this had defender, at least for limited. It's strength/toughness ratio is such that it suggest leaving it to block anyways. Plus, it would help out the defender sub-theme a lot
