Pay 1 mana and two life for protection seems pretty good too...

Both offensive and defensive capabilities:
Defensively can be used to:
-Prevent a creature from recieving damage from an pretty much any creature
-Nullify artifact abilities such as the {T} ability from Tumble Magnet by giving protection from artifacts
-Make negative auras such as Pacifism fall off your own creature
-Save a creature (or artifact) from a potential kill spell such as Dismember or Naturalize.
Offensively can be used to:
-Combat trick during combat, prevent damage from an opponent's creature by giving target creature protection from one of it's colours, or protection from artifacts.
-Give a creature pro. colours / artifact to make it unblockable for that colour (very effective against monocoloured decks)
An interesting side note, with Precursor Golem and his two tokens you can choose 3 different colours (or artifact) to give your golem creatures protection from, sin... (see all)

While I wouldn't go out of your way to pick this early, this will make it into almost any deck. It saves your best dudes from combat or removal, and all for just one mana. However, if I have even two other phyrexian mana cards (that I expect to pay life to cast), I would question putting this in a non-white build. But always board material, at the least. Probably 7th-ish pick.

Protection from X is a very versatile ability; can be used to remove hindering auras from your creatures, sneak an attacker past waiting blockers, or counter targeted removal (and in the case of , some untargeted damage stuff).
Phyrexian mana is very versatile, because you can run this card in just about any deck at all. I think protecting a key artifact or creature is well worth and 2 life.
Instants are very versatile, because... well, they're instants.
Triply versatile, and a common to boot; awesome art, and an awesome name; I don't normally take a shining to white cards, but this has won me over.

Loved this card to death at the launch sealed - great response to Forced Worship, and good for sneaking damage through, too.

@SoulShatterer: Brave the Elements only affects white creatures, while this can be easily used in non-white decks and, more importantly, on non-white creatures.
I consider it a mandatory playset in any deck built around Precursor Golem and the Splicers, even if you're not using other white cards. A low-cost way to protet your Golems from removal is always helpful.

Not obvious at first, but it allows you to sneak a large amount of attackers by, or let a chump blocker live to see another day.

This is the answer to Dismember, and you're potentially up 2 life. Might let Phyrexian Obliterator see play.
