Aaron’s Random Card Comment of the Day #51, 1/4/11
As a designer/developer, I find it fun to poke the bear. By that I mean revisit some generally-accepted taboo and try to make a version that is printable and fun. If “draw-sevens” are considered unprintable, I want to make one. If random discard is considered out of bounds, I want to reprint Hypnotic Specter (Hymn to Tourach was the real problem).
Other people that worked here prior to me must have enjoyed the forbidden fruit as well, as can be seen on Lotus Petal, originally printed in Tempest.
It was common there, probably considered cute and/or weak by the development teams of that era. Yet here we are, a dozen years later, and Lotus Petal is on the Vintage Restricted List and we’re commemorating its power by including it in From the Vault.
I can see why they thought this card was safe to print. Yes, Black Lotus is insanely powerful, but ... (see all)

it's funny because they tried to fix black lotus, and it's still exiled...
And no one complain about it not being as good as black lotus, the power nine aren't "good" they're "mistakes"

@Kryptnyt: Lotus Petal was in Tempest.
And one free mana? Sure!

I also play four of these in most of my casual decks. One free mana is always a great thing early in the game.
Back in the days when Tempest came out, these cards were very, very, very cheap in our local stores and nobody was paying attention to them. I should have hoarded them all back then. Maybe i got a hundred pieces of Lotus Petals today that i can sell for almost 200% of it's original price. Well...

I backed you up on the Goblin Lackey Exiled board, Kryptnyt, but I might have to disagree with you here, for two reasons: One, the card isn't really mythic, so much as it is a promo; all the cards in the Vault: Exiled set were given mythic status to set them apart from their normal printing, as (if I remember correctly) Wizards wanted to do something special for these select reprints, aside from giving them their own expansion symbol. And two, this card was chosen for this promo set because of its impact on the game when it was legal in Standard. It may only be a third of its parent's glorious self, but the fact remains that Lotus Petal made many, many decks that much scarier to deal with. At the very worst, it gave you two mana on turn one. That's a complete turn ahead of your opponent, and I have fashioned a deck that wins turn two whenever this is in my hand. My good friend has done the same with his deck, only turn one. It's a supporter card, sure, but because of its history within... (see all)

if this is broken enough to be Restricted in vintage I really fell like a card three times the power should be banned dont you?

This is only broken when thrown into a deck with broken cards.
Throw it into any Joe Blows deck... and its a 2 for 1 magnet. Same story with big daddy Black Lotus... true story.
Examples:
T1 Mountain
T1 Plains + This + White Knight (((Shock)))
T1 Island
T1 Swamp + Black Lotus + Hypnotic Specter + Unholy Strength ((Unsummon))
On magic tactics, I like seeing opponents drop Black Lotus, immediately thinking 2 for 1 time... True Story.
