A Shade without evasion is a sad sight? Most Shades actually don't have evasion and rely on their pump ability to survive combat.

Of the twenty one Shade creatures in magic, only six of them have some form of evasion. That's just a little bit over 1/4 of them.

Now a WRAITH without evasion is a sad sight! Of the five Wraith creatures in magic, ALL of them have swampwalk. Perhaps you mistook Shades for Wraiths?

Personally, I think this card is pretty good. Maybe not solid, but fun for players that want to hose green. Keep in mind it only costs

Can't wait to drop this on my first turn against a green deck. Don't care if I win I just want to pull it off.

It's not terrible sideboard material vs. green. Also, remember this was from the Dark Ritual era. Drop it on first turn, play a Ritual on second turn with two swamps out and swing with a 5/5. Or make it 7/7 with two Rits.
