If that ability was free, maybe then we'd be talking. Maybe.

Old school mana fixing. Inefficient, but he's not the worst thing ever. 2.5

So given the flavor text, the fireball either did:
8 damage to one target (x=8, no extra targets), or
3 damage to two targets (x=7, 1 extra target), or
2 damage to three targets (x=6, 2 extra targets), or
1 damage to four targets (x=5, 3 extra targets).
That's if the fellow using the golems decided to use their activated abilities, that is. But, we could also take this to mean that the planeswalker cast three of these guys before fireballing (it doesn't actually add any mana to activate their abilities after all). So that would be 15 mana available, and the ability to turn three of it into red (thus satisfying the red mana needed to cast fireball). So this puzzling mage instead cast a fireball that either did:
14 damage to one target (x=14, no extra targets), or
6 damage to two targets (x=13, 1 extra target), or
4 damage to three targets (x=12, 2 extra targets), or
2 damage to four targets (x=11, 3 extra targets), or
2 damage to five targets (x=10, 4 extra targets), or
1 damage... (see all)
