Man, this was such a good card in the early days of Magic. Still acceptable now, I'd think. Paying each turn is no big deal if you're already got 4 mana, and if this guy keeps swinging, you won't be paying for very long...

I sometimes wonder if something was changed at the last minute with this card. While the concept of "game balance" didn't exist back then, this card is almost directly inferior to Phantom Monster and Air Elemental. Sure, it gets 4 power on the board a bit faster, but at a high cost - an upkeep and laughable 1 toughness. Still, I played them back in the day, as awful as they are. They traded with Air Elementals, Sengir Vampires, Serra Angles, Dragon Whelps, and even Craw Wurms, so I guess they filled their limited role.
