@Earthdawn: In the old rules, artifacts didn't use the symbol. They were separated into Mono Artifacts, Poly Artifacts, and Continuous Artifacts. Mono tapped to use abilities, Poly artifacts did not tap to activate its effect, and Continuous had passive effects. A side-note to these old rules is that none of these artifacts didnt work while they were tapped (check out the newer and older texts for Howling Mine).
