@Spags- You're correct, as you can't actually target the Firewalker. You could damage it with this, but you can't target it, so it's a moot point.

@DarthMohawk - Draining Whelk counters a spell through an ability. However, if a spell saying that it can't be countered is targeted by Draining Whelk, it will still gain the counters. So if someone was casting this, and you used Draining Whelk in response, you'd get a 3/3 and then Combust would resolve as normal.
I believe that they added the "spells or abilities" to clear up confusion about rules. If a target becomes illegal, such as having Vines of Vastwood used on it in response to something like Terminate, then that spell would be countered. If a card simply says "can't be countered" it could be misinterpreted as something that could be cast through effects like Vines. I'm not sure if I explained that correctly.
