While her +1 isn't great, it's really just a countdown to her -8. Dear opponent, you now have two turns to kill me or deal with this card, otherwise you and your board get turned into an ash heap.

This planeswalker is an absolute battleship.
Targeting... Targeting... Kaboom!

If it weren't for other planeswalkers out there, she'd look better.
At the least, 5 mana nets 6 damage to a target creature. At best that's 2 mana more efficient than fireball, but it lacks the scaling. Still, if the full 6 isn't needed she starts growing and eventually the opponent has to deal with her, which means damage not coming to you. If her ultimate can come into play, it is a game changer.
Still, would be nice to have a little extra. Maybe 1 less mana cost or her -X damage could target other planeswalkers (her +1 can). Relative to other planeswalkers, 2 damage from her +1 doesn't seem overpowered -- Koth's mountains hit for 4 and Chandra costs 1 more. Gideon Jura effectively has no ultimate but can swing for 6.
Then again, maybe it's all the other planeswalkers are just better than they should be.

Since Koth of the Hammer got printed Chandra has actually become much better for mono red control variants. When you drop a Koth then drop a Chandra (even better is drop a Karn in there somewhere too) it becomes much harder for your opponent to evaluate which PW to swing at. If Koth goes ultimate it's GG, if Chandra goes ultimate you wipe his board.
Not to mention a resolved Chandra = 6dmg to a creature for 5 mana, that is quite good. Also both Koth and Chandra can ultimate the turn after they are dropped with just a single instance of Proliferate.

It's odd how my prediction that Chandra would fall out of play due to combust was wildly incorrect. I thought combust would make her obsolete for killing baneslayers, but actually the titans scared baneslayer away, so now the creatures to kill are stuff combust can't smash while Chandra barely gets them. Still, you're paying 5 mana for it.
Chandra's biggest issue is that once your opponent does 1-2 points of damage to her, she's not threatening anyone with her ultimate (it'll take too long to build her up to 8 at that point), which means it's pointless to use her horrible +1, so then you're stuck with a -X that will kill herself quickly. Compared to other planeswalkers, like elspeth or gideon or jace 2.0 or ajani vengeant, who have very solid +1 or 0 abilities, which means they're a threat even if they're at 1-2 loyalty.
She's not BAD, but if I'm not mistaken, at the highest level of play (e.g. where all the pricey cards like jaces are flown around the place) the only time she pops u... (see all)

I don't know why she's so hated, she lands with 6 counters. That's staying power. Her 1 damage doesn't seem like much, but with her pet Chandra's Spitfire and a Quest for Pure Flame it's a pretty serious threat. Her abilities may not be interesting, or subtle lol, but that's what I expect from a Pyromancer.

I remember pulling this out of a Lorwyn pack my grandma bought me. Thanks, grandma!
I think I traded it for a plethora of other stuff since it was so "valuable" back then.
