Soothing Balm is better... because it is from Masques. Oh, and you can aim it elsewhere.

I think people look at cards like this in the wrong way. Granted, it sucks against Infect, but not everyone plays Infect.
I sideboard it for my mono-white standard deck, to use as sort of a soft counter against the super-fast standard mono-red Kuldotha Rebirth, Galvanic Blast decks. Instant speed makes it playable, not main deck of course, but it's very good at taking the bite out of Lightning Bolt and all its myriad progeny.
It's certainly not winning the game, but with some equipped Sunspear Shikari's on the board, and dropping a few Kemba's Skyguards, you can gum up the game until red runs out of steam.

This and the other life gaining spells seem to be an attempt to make Felidar Sovereign and Serra Ascendant into a playable deck type. There may be a point where it becomes playable, but this is clearly worse than Rest for the Weary.
Infect is actually uniquely bad against that sort of a lifegain deck since it does nothing to prevent the opponent's ascendants becoming 6/6 lifelink flyers for 1 mana at 30 life or him winning when his life hits 40.

Given the pressure of poison, it might have been nice to see a 'or prevent (some number) of damage' - life totals being a little less wholly meaningful than they once were.

Best when used against your opponent's alpha strike, when subsequently followed by your alpha strike. Beating a Spike with a quintessential 'scrub card' like this is worth twenty troll points in my book.

Lifegain of type that was obsolete long ago. Now in set where lifegain is even more obsolete then ever. Was it too hard to add some doubling/cantrippin' metalcraft to make it worth 14 pick? Worst card in Scars, IMO.

Do we really need this? Big yawn!
In this set I would have rather seen a white card that deals with poison counters and preferably something of better quality than that Leeches card from Homelands.
