It's really hard to describe how overpowered this was in its day until you've seen it in action. You'd think the per turn discard would balance it, but it didn't.
Slightly less overwhelming now that a 4/4 for 4 is more typical, but still incredibly awesome. (Nowadays you'd want to be sure you have some way to negate his drawback or to draw extra cards. But still, turning all your spare mana to damage every turn will wreck most people's boards.)

4/4 for 4.
Ping engine, can take out some creatures outside of combat.
Regenerate.
Can work around the drawback.
Nice card.

That awkward moment when...Wizards blatantly violates their reserved list. ;-) http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/article.aspx?x=magic/products/reprintpolicy

The beauty of it is that what you would draw matters less; your mana is going to be spent on regeneration and zapping.

I do not believe this was (or is) an overpowered card; all its power came from the cards surrounding it. Grim Monolith was overpowered. Thran Dynamo was overpowered. Metalworker was extremely overpowered. If you don't agree with me, think of it this way. If you simply cast Grim Monolith turn 2 (no Voltaic Key), you get six mana turn three. You'd be hard-pressed to find even a way to generate five mana turn three in Standard using only one card, much less six mana. They stopped printed Seething Song for quite some time already, and it's not because of Modern storm. (Song is banned there anyways)
Suppose that Masticore didn't exist at the time, but Wurmcoil Engine did - then everyone would remember Wurmcoil Engine as the most broken creature ever, because it often came down turn three. Heck, you could take any decent mana-hungry spell - auto... (see all)
