It fetches Steel Hellkite, Darksteel Colossus, Blightsteel Colossus, and Myr Battlesphere for 3 CMC. The only way it could be better was if it dropped whatever you fetched onto the battlefield, in which case you would quickly find yourself being the most unnecessary part of your deck. Also, the card would be named Tinker.
Besides, from the perspective of a budget player, I am never going to own any of the Moxen that Trinket Mage is designed to fetch. Artifact lands, maybe, but never a mox or a lotus. This guy is just much more relevant to my collection than his little brother.
Art does suck out loud, though....
