at the pre-release people were always using them to deal damage, neglecting that the protection could have been more useful at the time. I was at 3 life and had Olivia Voldaren out and my opponent had a 4/4 and this. Instead of swinging with the creature with PROTECTION FROM VAMPIRES, he sacrificed the torch to deal damage with it to a weakened (2/2) olivia. i used her ability on my opponents creature to put her out of range and then later took control of the creature and won.
Please, remember this card has more than one function!

This brings to mind the LotR scene on Weathertop, where Aragorn uses his torch to drive off the ringwraiths, then throws it to get rid of the last one...

Blazing Torch's secret third use: it's cheap enough that if you need to flip some damn werewolves, it's an easy second card. So many people drop it first turn without thinking about how useful a one-drop can be at reverting werewolves or keeping them human. By the time you actually need it, you'll probably be able to play and equip it without a major disruption to your gameplan.

Welcome back!
