I love that haste was not a term back then. It made the rare creatures that did have it so harsh because there were so few of them. This made the effect a lot more surprising when a creature was coming at you so suddenly.

This was one of the cards that defined The Dark. Oh, sure - Maze of Ith is more amazing, but people back then badly wanted Ball Lightnings because they were so neat and unusual - there was nothing else in the game like them. Still a good card, though overshadowed by more powerful creatures with haste.

Ball Lightning is a very powerful card. Since they changed it's creature type to elemental, it is brutal in red elementals. in ye older days it saw play beside lightning bolt and incinerate, which it still does in my legacy deck. roughly a third of their life total for RRR in 1 card is nothing to sneeze at.

Indeed it is not. Admittedly very often it's an irritating blocker removed with a whack to the opponent as a bonus, but that's still a perfectly fine deal at this cost.

Ball lightning is an amazing card that really fits into red. It can be very risky to play due to pingers who can kill it before it even attacks, and pretty much any card that deals at least one damage at instant speed. Also creatures with firststrike really ruin ball lightnings day. But when you get past all the little problems that can present themselves as threats for ball lightning it is pure undeniable power.

I have seen three ball lightnings hit the field in one turn and it was gg right then and there.
It is one of thouse few older cards that has actully aged well. R&D knows that this card is loved by many, infact that is why it has seen so many reprints and knock offs. Put simply it is a classic.

Also, if you love Ball Lightning and you perfer to play green (possibly for the mana excel) consider groundbreaker.
