The problem is that many of the creatures they don't want to attack with have a tap ability of their own, so they don't need to attack.
But certainly there's uses for this. Deathtouch is your friend here.

It's alright. I'm sure it has its place in certain decks. I'm sorry but I dont have the knowledge or experience to back this statement, but that doesnt mean I wont bet on it...

I don't think I quite understand how this ability works... I mean, say you target a Birds of Paradise with it.
Can't your opponent, just, y'know... tap it for mana in response before the ability resolves?
There's no rule that prevents you from tapping mana sources without casting spells, is there?
