Its got magical green and blue stones built into the mortar, and your fortress not only protects you but fuels your green and blue spells. Don't question it, just use your imagination.

I like the cycle of familiars because it lines up with the Alara shards, and provides mana ramp in color pairs/triples that don't have access to {G}. Especially in Commander games, where casting big spells and casting multiple spells a turn are both important, these guys put you on an even footing with the player who T1 Llanowar Elvesed.

How does one make a wall a familiar? And it just must be so humiliating for everyone else. "Oh so what's YOUR familiar? A raven? A cat? Perhaps an owl? Well take a gander at that fortress behind me. Yeah that's my familiar."

I think, if you notice, theres vines growing all over the walls. Maybe thats the form the fallen battle mages take? I don't know for sure but it's a thought.
