The reason this hasn't been errata'd to use fight is because with fight the two creatures deal damage at the same time. The Yeti (and his predecessor the Tracker actually get to hit first. So if you somehow gave the yeti wither or infect, he could reduce his target's power level BEFORE the target gets to hit the yeti back.
