It's true that this is mildly useful for a Ward. Wonder who many of these I'd trade for a Mask of Law and Grace. On the other hand I don't know if Crown of Awe is worth the extra mana. The concept, however, has really been brought to fruition in the top notch card Sword of Fire and Ice.
On a final note, I'd like to see a more economical equipment that focuses on just protection from red. Maybe we'll see one in the not so distant future.

Definitely dated, but giving a creature " Lightning Bolt/Burn Proof" for one mana is never a bad thing. Especially for those white weenies with great abilities.
