The art is great. But wouldn't you rather run Dissipate instead?

Ha.
I love how Counterspell is rated 5/5, and this is 2/5.

This is a counter spell that can counter any type of spell. The original counterspell isn't going to be reprinted anytime soon, so this will have to do.

It's interesting seeing how the art and flavor text of Cancel has changed over the years. Being able to have four different Cancels in a deck sounds pretty neat as well, thanks for bringing that up Yozuk.

That flavor text would have been absolutely kickass on Quash. Ah well.

This is still a strong spell, but people want their counters to be 2 mana. Wizards has decided hardcounters at BlueBlue are not going to be printed unless they are given a drawback (deprive).

Dissipate outclasses this, but you would still would want to use this over dissipate if you had things like Rise from the Grave in your deck. Also you could run x4 of this and dissipate.

This is to Cancel and Jace is to Counterspell- that is- this is the art you play if you feel the need to bling your cards.

If you're blinging Cancel, you are a magnanimous player. Or a Bureaucrat whose never played Magic but has lots of other people's money to spend...

LoL- it WOULD be just like the Congress of Azor to pass a bill funding the blinging of Cancel while thousands of Boros are out of work, Gruul are warring with Rakdos, Golgari are resorting to cannibalism (never mind they do that anyway, it sounds bad so the presses will pretend it's abnormal behavior for them), Dimir is leaking things to the Secretary of the Press and WikiLeaks, Simic and Orzhov are having their regularly-scheduled Science v. Religion debate on every YouTube, regardless of what the YouTube was actually about, and Selesnya is doing squat nothing except watching the Lord of the Rings 100 Billion Times while wating for the Hobbit to come out....and Izzet is busy doing things people actually care about: Fi... (see all)

I know everyone is upset about Cancel being reprinted. But here is my prediction as to why: Wizards wanted to take it out of the Core set.

Cancel is the baseline for counterspells. Barely playable, but not so bad where it will never see play outside of limited. It is the beginner's counter. They wanted to keep it legal in Standard, so they put it in the block that won't rotate out with the current Core set, and will be legal through the next.

"Why?" you may ask? I'm predicting a better counter. A step up from Cancel. Perhaps, and I'm just spit-balling here, a spell from the past that shares identical rules, yet costs one colorless less...?

Counterspell in Magic 2014. Wouldn't that be something...

I like that it's an azorius Magistrate stopping one of his OWN soldiers from using a spell, rather than one of the other guilds. They always say the Azorius are obstructive bureaucrats, but you never see them do it to themselves, even though that's what bureaucracy is supposed to do (stop itself).
