Man, this is more than playable, it's actually GREAT. For a single {G}, you get an attacker that can keep attacking into most creatures that drop the first couple turns, and then when something can kill it, it gets tapped down for a turn.

On their own they're not so good, since most players will just ignore them -- one damage a turn is unlikely to be game-changing.
But they make a great target for equipment or enchantments. Dropping Rancor on them is fun -- a turn-two 3/3 trample, and even if they manage to block it with something big enough to kill it, it'll temporarily paralyze it. And you get the Rancor back to pump something else that can hurt your opponent while their defenses are down.
They also make a great way to deliver any of the Sword of X and Y attacks.
