I figure gates are better than any other "come into play tapped" dual lands just for the fact that CAN interact with other cards. Personally I think they are the power creep of cards like Coastal Tower and what not. Hey I figure Wizards had to give something more than just access to two mana colors, unfortunately the cards they interact with art that great...for now.
