At the time a 10/10 trample was rediculous for 9 even with having to sac lands. I remember seeing this card win games in competitive play. (although I think I remember some other amzing cards in that deck like Black Lotus and Moxes)

You can also untap him with other means, not just sac'ing land...

I think this card's playability is not on the field, but with it's mana cost and it's p/t
Take these for example
Painter's Servant with Blazing Shoal
Induce Despair, Living Destiny or Disaster Radius
Elvish Piper(or some other way to cheat it into play), Soul's Fire, Fling for gg
Eye of Yawgmoth

Horrendously bad card even if you can cheat it into play for cheaper then it's cmc it still comes into play tapped and requires massive land sac to be used even once and sacrificing 4 islands to attack one time is terrible even with trample

I guess it's flavorful, to say the least.
I mean, a giant creature made out of water requiring to sacrifice the lands it's been made out of?
Sure, terrabad card, but flavorfully...?

You can get around the tap/untap problems quite easily with Eternal Warrior a red common, which only costs 1 Red.
