I have a feeling that the lot of people who rated this low had never seen it in action. This card was a staple in Sligh deck because it's so aggressively costed for the environment at the time, and red is very good at killing blockers that unless opponent has a direct damage spell themselves, Jackal Pup could attack each turn without hindrance or costing owner's life.

Yes. Vicious. It's a 2/1 creature with one mana for heavens sake! It's worse than savannah lions and worse than a whole bunch of other 1 costing 2/1 or 2/2 creatures but red doesn't have better :/ Well Tattermunge Maniac is on the same line nowadays.

Just a great card that defines red. A 2/1 for 1. Yeah, it burns you. But it hits the opponent too.
Anyone ever see a Shivan Meteor hit one of these? Haha...^_^

It's cool because it drops on turn one and proceeds to deal two damage every turn until they either block it or kill it.
If they block it, most likely it will be dealt less damage than it has dealt to your opponent, and thus result in a favorable damage output balance for you.
If they use a flat kill spell to kill it, the damage will be completely one-sided.
If they kill it with lethal burn spells, they will use small burns on this guy (Due to his one toughnes), and hold on to their big guns for your big guns.
Bottom line, unless they immediately kill this guy with a burn spell, you will deal more damage to your opponent than they will deal back to you.

Jackal Pup, the star of a deck that created a revolution in how Magic was played. Sligh came out of nowhere to dominate the tournament world and introduce people to the previously unheard of concept of mana curve, and the beloved Jackal Pup was at the center of it all. Good dog!
