just because it is a bird, does not mean it has flying, just because it is a fish does not mean it has islandwalk, just because it is a wall does not mean it has defender, it has what it has and what you give it, if creature types imparted abilities, then changlinges would have been so broken and abused, it is mind twisting

Combined with Master Transmuter, this guy can serve as a repeatable source of creature removal. With multiple transmuters out, you can exile (not just destroy, EXILE) all of your opponent's best creatures in one turn! Also, with the transmuter out, he becomes extremely hard to get rid of, as the transmuter can simply bounce him back to your hand if he becomes the target of a malignant spell or ability (which would also cause him to come back onto the battlefield and exile another creature :-} )

that would be changelings, not shapeshifters

This is really powerful and I enjoyed playing with it. Had it been a 2/4 that simply exiles a creature it would have been good; with the copy effect it went into Tooth and Nail decks to combat Darksteel Colossus from another Tooth and Nail deck. I also enjoyed using this with Crystal Shard, but that was when I was more focused on pwning than trying to make the game fun for the other side.
Though, the art still makes me feel uneasy to this day.

Plus a creature having 'changeling' or anything else for that matter doesn't nessisarily give them a specific ability, other than Legendary of course. If you have a creature that is a changeling, it doesn't mean it counts as all creature types unless it says so in its rules text, or another permanent you controll says so in its rules text. For example; I could have a bird creature in play, but just because it's a bird doesn't mean it has flying.
This card is okay, but it is lacking in one area that pains me, it doesn't gain the imprinted creature's abilities, which would have been nice.

I agree that this card can be very useful. It's a very effective way to exile a creature with big advantage. The not gaining the abilities of the exiled creature, although usually frustrating, can be useful when that ability is something like those found on Leviathan or Phyrexian Dreadnought. In fact, it better be a big creature otherwise you're spending an awful lot of mana to exile a 2/2 or the like. And that is the thing, this card doesn't always work because you might want the extra artifact in play for affinity reasons and just go ahead and play it on a little guy. The last thing is its power and toughness, when would you ever be so desperate to play it as a 2/4 vanilla for six? It's not like you'll ever un-imprint the exiled creature... at least I don't think so. Then why isn't this card just a 1/1 for five colorless? I guess the 2/4 thing offers some flexibility in a pinch and makes this card weirder (read cooler) than if it was a 1/1 bu... (see all)

This card should have never been printed.. its the most infuriating card against creature decks that I've ever seen. You can have a 10/10 regenerator and they just drop their 6 mana duplicant that doesn't even need colored mana and they exile your creature and land up with their own huge threat. Pair in with cloud posts and they can be casting them on turn 3. At least shriekmaw, while still very powerful, only works on nonblack non artifact and its not exiled. I'll be happy when mirrodin rotates out of extended.. they certainly over did it with a lot of cards in this set including lightning greaves, because of its 0 equip cost.

Since this is a shapeshifter, is it also all creature types (unless it's imprinted?)

One of the most effective ways to handle an indestructible creature.
It really helps in a big late-game situation like this:
**Opponent casts Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre and has Worship + Sterling Grove on the battlefield.
Opponent: "And now, what are you going to do? You can't stop me!"
You: "Did you include Asceticism or Privileged Position in the deck?"
Opponent: "No, but..."
You: "Well then, I don't run enchantment destruction but I'm still going to kick your butt. I cast Duplicant."
Opponent: "I have no counterspells, and even if I had creature removal cards in my hand they wouldn't matter because Duplicant will have already hit the board!"
You: "Excellent. I will use Duplicant's special ability to exile Ulamog."
Opponent: "No!"
You: "Oh look, I have an Anger in my graveyard and you have less than 10 ... (see all)
