This is a home-run card for me.

>Puddnhead makes such fantastically creepy art.
>I love the reference to Nightmare.
>A manaless equip cost means that more often than not, the turn you play this card you can equip it and swing right away.

When Mirrodin block first came out, I played at our local FNM with these and Nightmares - I loved nothing better than giving my flying horse his namesake equipment. (yes; I really did this, and yes, I realize that Mirrodin had much, much better things to offer)

These days, there are a lot more black creatures with built-in lifelink than there were when the card came out (El-Hajjaj, anyone?). I have a monoblack deck where, ideally, a turn 3 Vampire Nighthawk picks up a turn 4 Nightmare Lash and immediately recoups the equip cost for me.

Everyone says how this is outdone by Lashwrithe, but I think these cards have pretty good synergy. Yeah, running a 4-of of Lashwrithe is sweet, seeing as you get a Germ already equipped with it (Living Weapon is awesome!) But dropping a Nightmare Lash the turn after a Lashwrithe is too fun! When creatures start getting double boosts from the number of Swamps you control, you really get the mono-black feel of things.

I understand these strategies aren't the most competitive, but it really captures the way Casual play should go. Having fun, playing inexpensive cards with excellent synergy for "sick" plays, and NOT needing to run crazy pricey Dual-lands or Fetch-lands. This is the way I played Casual back in high school, and I miss the excitement of homebrew successes. As you can guess, I ran Nightmare Lashes alongside Dross Golems, etc. for some budget-friendly Casual fun. And the artwork is simply stunning.

This comment is way too long for a simple card like Nightmare Lash.

Has anyone had the chance to run this with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth? That seems like the kind of field Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon can get behind.

Korlash, heir to the black blade with this and enough fetch power like lilliana plus Ob Nixilis, the Fallen trigering off korlashs' Grandeur = major power

A little costly to lay down, but the fact that you can equip immediately makes it worth it.

Korlash didn't exist at the time this card was printed...perhaps Korlash was based on this card, though.

I like how the name is a reference to both Nightmare and Korlash, Heir to Blackblade
