Pinging is burn and burn is red. To me, it seems like WotC was confused before Planar Chaos. Doesn't change that this guy is awful one way or the other.

That's a pretty hideous drawback just to be +1/+1 stronger than Tom. It's a pinger, why do you need P/T anyway? It should be tapped all the time...

It'd be fun if he did 8 or 10 points of damage... To a random target. THAT is a card that needs to be made.
This card? Prototype for spellshapers, at least... It's horrible, but Kris Mage is hella hot, and without this guy we never would've had Kris Mage.

I feel like this artwork was done for a very different card. The blast of fire is much bigger than I would expect for 1 damage, and the licid on his head seems very prominent for not being relevant to the card in any way. I bet this was going to be a licid that granted a firebreathing or pinging ability but got changed late in production.
