5Red is standard cost for vanilla red 5/5 creature. Put Pyroclasm on top of that for Red and the creature isn't overcosted.

You kind of have to compare this guy to Thunder Dragon, printed a set before this. Flying, one more damage to groundlings, two less damage to fliers and players.
Some people also hate it when they spend 7 on a creature and it dies to a Lightning bolt. Personally, I don't mind.
One of the advantages of Magma Giant over Thunder dragon is that thunder dragon kills Dragonspeaker Shamans, while Magma Giant will not kill Stinkdrinker Daredevils. It also makes MG a viable option over Thundercloud Shaman, which could kill the daredevils, though does not always do that.
I prefer the Fifth Dawn artwork though, he looks like "Red Naked Man Batheing in Velveeta"

Not all that bad of an effect (overcosted of course) and really Badass art. Awesome!

One of the few cards that went from Portal to being reprinted in a 'real' set (5th Dawn).

Thankfully, this was reprinted in Fifth Dawn; if it hadn't been, the "from your hand" clause would still be in effect.
